Tips for Road Tripping with Kids

Taking a road trip with kids seems like a terrible idea to any parent that actually lives in the real world.  The longer the road trip, the more times Are we there yet? will be uttered.  With that said, the road trip is the quintessential American vacation.  So how do you manage the American vacation without the American mental breakdown?

I experimented with ten different hacks on our recent road trip from New Jersey to New Mexico.  This was our first trip that went into triple digits (actually 4,200 miles round trip).  The cast of characters included, three 4-year-olds, five adults and two cars.  The goal was to make it to a family wedding with all eight people still alive.  Once we made it, our goal became getting home with all eight people without losing anyone.  Which sometimes proved harder than you might think.

  1. Love this article. There were definitely some things I've never thought about like packing the suitcases on the roof and a small bag in the car. And of course bringing a childless young adult with lots of energy along to help with the kids! Brilliant!!! Thanks for the tips!!!
